Strawberry is part of the rose family. Botanists consider it as false fruit or pseudocarp. There are many tiny fruits embedded in the flesh of the strawberry. There are also brown or white specks that are considered to be its seed but are true fruit, called achenes. Each will surround a tiny seed. Achenes make the strawberry rich in fiber. Strawberries are derived from a single flower and more than one ovary that will result in the formation of aggregated fruit.

Botany is the branch of science that helps to classify edibles into fruits and vegetables.

What is a fruit?

Have you ever notice what makes a fruit a fruit? According to Botanist’s definition fruit is the part of a plant developed from the ovary. It will contain seeds for protection and facilitate dispersal. Citrus, berry, stonefruit pome, etc. are the subcategories of fruits. The fruit is the reproductive part of the plant that is edible.

True Berries

True berries derive from one flower and one ovary and have many seeds. For example, tomato, kiwis, or do pomegranates. Berry is a fleshy fruit that lacks stone.

In this fruit, the whole outer layer of the ovary ripe into potential edible. There are some berries without flesh like peppers.

Berries are usually small, round, juicy, sweet, or sour and have very bright colors. Berries have seeds present on the inside of the fruit. But in the case of strawberries, seeds are embedded around the outside of the fruit. The inner and middle layers of the fruit wall are not distinct or separated from each other.

Types of berries

There are commonly two classes of berries.

  1. Hesperidium

This is a citrus berry of leathery-rind.

  1. Pepos

These berries are elongated and have tough skin. For example Watermelons, cucumber.

Technically strawberry is considered as the accessory fruit containing a large receptacle (red part) of the flower. The seeds of the strawberries are actual fruit. They each contain a seed. Accessory fruit is the one that contains additional floral parts that will develop into the achenes or seeds on the surface of the strawberries.

Botanists have strict Botanical definition for the plants and the parts and the fruits they grow. We use some names of the fruits and vegetable that does not correspond to their Botanical definition. Like strawberries are not true berries.

Cultivation of Strawberries

Strawberries are cultivated as a hybrid of two different parents. As they are hybrid, they can resist extreme weather. The fruit buds are formed in the fall and it requires adequate moisture.

Largest Producers of Strawberries

California and Florida are the largest producers of strawberries. It grows in all 50 states. It also grows significantly in Pennsylvania but for a short season. It lasts for 3 ½ weeks.

We often think and try to classify eatables as fruits and vegetables. Some of them can easily be differentiated. But there are some edibles about which we get confused. Usuallyedibles with sweet or sour taste are classified as fruits while those which are not much sugary as vegetables. We use different criteria to differentiate them. One of them is that we consider which part of the plant we are eating. Mostly the vegetables are those parts that are cultivated for edibles parts, while the fruit is the ripened ovary of seed-bearing parts. Several edibles are misplaced in the category of fruits or vegetables. Like tomato is considered as a tomato but according to its features, it fit the definition of fruit.

Misconception about Strawberries

The scientific usage of the term berry is different from the one which we commonly used. True berries derive from one flower and one ovary and have many seeds. We usually consider every small juicy fruit like a berry, but this is not the case. Many fruits are included in this category according to the definition but these fruits are not commonly known as berries. For example, grapes, tomato, cucumber, eggplant. People usually think and consider strawberries as berries. And inquire whether is strawberry a berry? but strawberries and raspberries are not berries according to the Botanist’s definition of berries.
